A strong 6.9-magnitude earthquake rocked the northwestern Mexican state of Baja California, and was felt in the southern part of the US state of California, the US Geological Survey reported Sunday.

The quake, which struck at 3:40pm local time, was at a depth of 32.3 kilometres and was located 26 kilometres south-southwest of Guadalupe Victoria, Baja California, Mexico.

Witnesses say the quake was felt in downtown Los Angeles.

Baja California is Mexico's northernmost, and westernmost state.

Mexican officials say there have been no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

However a Reuters witness in Tijuana said cars in a parking lot outside of a building could be seen jolting with the quake.

"I'm shaking like a leaf ... the pool water was just going everywhere," said Jean Nelson in Indio, California outside of Palm Springs.

In LA, the city fire department went on earthquake status and some stalled elevators were reported.

A woman told LA fire authorities she was stuck in an elevator that had been descending from the 34th floor in a high rise building in Century City.
