The federal government will reportedly undertake a major independent review of the nation's intelligence agencies.

The move has been prompted by what the Sydney Morning Herald describes as "an unprecedented array of security challenges ranging from terrorism to the rise of China and cyber-spying".

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's department has confirmed it is preparing for what will be Australia's first significant intelligence review in five years and the third since the September 11 attacks in the US, the paper says.

The review is likely to examine a need for the nation's six intelligence agencies to balance urgent intelligence requirements to combat terrorism including "lone wolves" with longer-term considerations related to social and political changes in the Indo-Pacific region.
