Malaysian defence minister vows to find MH370

Never in the world's history has there been a more complex search than the one for missing plane MH370.

Malaysian defence minister vows to find MH370

Those were the words from Malaysia's Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein who's been in Perth to meet one of the crews searching for the plane.

He's also called on China to send vessels to the search zone.

Hishammuddin Hussein has met with American crew members from the GO Phoenix search vessel.

The vessel has been moored in Fremantle harbor in Western Australia after spending weeks in the southern Indian Ocean searching for MH370.

The minister says he has such confidence in the high-tech sonar scanning equipment that he's almost 100 per cent sure they'll find the plane if the experts have the right area.

But he says China also needs to send ships to the search zone more than two thousand kilometres off the WA coast.

"I just came back from Beijing two weeks ago and I spoke to the highest level. And I would like to see the Chinese flag flying in the search area too. And I think that's not a problem. The more assets that we can deploy, the more people that can come onboard. Partners that, traditionally, people will say will never work together, we have proven them wrong."

The defence minister, who's been criticised for the handling of the MH370's disappearance, says the search is unprecedented in complexity, but also global cooperation.

"In a world that is full of divide, in a world full of cynicism, full of wars. And this is something that we should really impress on the people out there. What you guys are doing is really not the norm in the global scheme of things. And this is something that you should all be very proud about and we must applaud that."

And there's no doubting the pride amongst the crew of the G-O Phoenix who say they are conscious of the world's gaze as they search for the tiny wreckage in thousands of kilometres of water.

But one member, Jay Larson the ship's chief engineer, is perhaps even more proud because his 20-year old son Kolter alongside him.

"We had our technician at the last minute bail out on us. Kolter was available. He's an electrical engineer genius and we asked him to come along. He's been a very solid member. I'm proud of him. I don't know that we can understand the weight of what we're doing honestly. It's pretty amazing to see the minister of defence up there saying these words and they're all very true. We've all experienced losses close to us and we're out here trying our hardest."

Jay Larson's father died in a helicopter crash, giving him a personal understanding of the desperation behind the search for MH370.

"Personally I've had an air accident in my family where we didn't know the true answer...So we understand the gravity of this."

It wasn't just MH370 that was on the Malaysian Defence Minister's mind, with flight MH17 which was shot down over the Ukraine in July - also on the agenda.

He revealed that the body of his stepgrandmother is the only one of the 43 Malaysians onboard who hasn't been identified.

He's called for cool heads and says Prime Minister Tony Abbott's comment about shirt fronting the Russian President doesn't help tensions.

"There's only one missing and that's my stepgrandmother. So I am an OK too. Secondly, I've put aside my personal feelings on that because we do not want to risk the lives of our security forces by going into an area that is risky, that is at war. And to complicate that with the finger pointing - I would leave that to the criminal investigation committee. We will find justice for MH17."
