Prime minister and self-confessed political drama fan Malcolm Turnbull doesn't think much of Frank Underwood.

He describes the fictional win-at-any-cost politician, who connives his way into the US presidency in the hit TV show House of Cards, as the "classic villain".

Mr Turnbull also named Danish television's Borgen as the political drama that comes closest to real political life.

"Its a very raw, real political drama, whereas House of Cards, which we all love, is more of a melodrama," Mr Turnbull said in an interview with The Guardian.

"Frank Underwood is an absolutely classic villain, in fact he's actually just one step away from Snidely Whiplash.

"But (Borgen's fictional politician) Birgitte Nyborg I think that is a very interesting role because it shows all of the stresses between family life, political life, the compromises that have to be made."

Borgen ran over three seasons (2010-13) telling the story of Nyborg who becomes Denmark's first female prime minister.

House of Cards' fourth season is due to air in 2016, with a charming though nefarious Underwood installed as US president.
