Sri Lanka spearhead Lasith Malinga is set to make his return to international cricket after being selected in the squad to face Australia in a three-match T20 series.

Malinga hasn't played for almost a year due to injury.

He was ruled out of last year's T20 World Cup and IPL with a bone bruise on his knee.

The luckless quick was on the road to recovery ahead of Sri Lanka's series against South Africa last month, but a bout of dengue fever ruled him out.

At his best the 33-year-old can be devastating in the shortest form of the game and still holds the benchmark in the BBL, with 6-7 while playing for the Melbourne Stars in 2012.

Opening batsman Upul Tharanga will captain Sri Lanka with regular skipper Angelo Mathews sidelined with a hamstring injury he picked up in the South Africa series.

The squad is set to arrive in Canberra on Monday ahead of Wednesday's warm-up game against the Prime Minister's XI at Manuka Oval.

They will then play Australia at the MCG on February 17 and Geelong on February 19 before wrapping up the series in Adelaide on February 22.

Sri Lanka squad: Upal Tharanga (c), Niroshan Dickwella, Asela Gunarathna, Dilshan Munaweera, Kusal Mendis, Milinda Siriwardena, Sachith Pathirana, Chamara Kapugedara, Seekuge Prassanna, Nuan Kulaskera, Isuru Udana, Dasun Chanaka, Lakshan Sandakan, Lasith Malinga, Vikum Sanjaya.
