A 42-year-old Perth man is being sent to a maximum-security psychiatric ward for assessment, after allegedly murdering his elderly father and trying to kill his mother.

Mount Lawley man Nigel Chaytor was charged on Saturday after Keith Chaytor, 72, was fatally injured and Estelle Chaytor, 72, was seriously injured at their Kelmscott home on Friday morning.

He appeared in Northbridge Magistrates Court on Sunday with an arm and hand heavily bandaged.

He did not apply for bail, and will be sent to Graylands Hospital's Frankland Centre and seek legal advice ahead of a court appearance next month.

The family of the victims issued a statement thanking those who had given love and support.
