A man is in custody over the death of another man whose body was found among reeds in a Melbourne creek.

Police taped off a wide area of Kororoit Creek and its surrounding parklands in Sunshine after a passer by found the body just after 9am on Wednesday.

The victim, believed to be aged in his late 40s or early 50s, was viciously assaulted about 6am that same day, police say.

The homicide squad released two images of a man they wished to speak to a few hours after the body was found.

In the photographs - taken at two different times on Wednesday - the man appeared to have changed clothes, a fact noted by police.

"I think you wouldn't have to think too hard why he may have wanted to change his appearance," homicide squad head Mick Hughes said.

Detective Hughes told reporters a pedestrian had seen the man near where the body was found.

The suspect was arrested in Sunshine at 5.30pm, and is being questioned by police.

Det Hughes said it was unclear what sort of weapon, if any, had caused the man's injuries.

"I'm not in a position to say anything other than it is a vicious assault that's resulted in this death," he said.

Although the man has been arrested, police said they were still searching for the bags the man had with him in the photos.

The victim is yet to be identified, and the exact cause of death will be determined after an autopsy, to be performed on Wednesday night.
