A man has serious burns to his chest after an explosion at a building site in South Melbourne where a grinder was being used in an underground area.

A man is in a serious condition after a suspected gas explosion at a Melbourne worksite.

The man suffered burns to his chest during the explosion at a building site in South Melbourne around 12.30pm on Tuesday.

The explosion occurred while a grinder was being used in an underground area of a worksite on York Street, Victoria Police say.

The man was taken to The Alfred Hospital in a serious condition. WorkSafe Victoria is investigating.
