A man has been charged after a video surfaced on social media, allegedly showing him repeatedly punching an injured kangaroo in the head.

New South Wales police charged the 18-year-old man on Wednesday afternoon with committing an act of cruelty upon an animal and harm or attempt to harm a protected animal.

Police said they were made aware of the video, which had been posted to Snapchat, earlier on Wednesday.

The 18-year-old was granted bail to appear at Holbrook Local Court on 12 March.

The footage appears to show a man, dressed in a white shirt and green shorts, repeatedly striking the kangaroo in the head as another person laughs in the background.

The kangaroo later died, police said.

Authorities believe the incident took place in the Woomargama National Park, in southern NSW, in January 2019.

Investigations continue and a further person is expected to be charged, police said.

Anyone with further information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
