Man charged for 1986 rape of NSW girl

A 71-year-old man has been charged with the 1986 rape of a Sydney girl, as well as the attempted sexual assault of a woman in 1991.

An elderly man has been extradited from Queensland to NSW to face charges of historical sex crimes, including the rape of a 13-year-old girl.

The 71-year-old man is accused of grabbing the girl as she was riding her bike in Kogarah, south Sydney, and sexually assaulting her in 1986.

In a separate incident, the man allegedly forced his way into a 23-year-old woman's Cronulla home in 1991, assaulting her and then trying to sexually assault her.

Police say they had a breakthrough in both cases when the Cold Case Justice Project re-examined forensic evidence, which identified the man.

Queensland police arrested the man at a Wacol facility on Tuesday, and he was returned to Sydney.

He has been charged with sexual intercourse with person under 16 years old, break and enter with intent to commit a felony and aggravated attempt sexual assault inflicting actually bodily harm.

He appeared in Central Local Court and was remanded in custody to re-appear on December 17.
