Man charged for robbery of policeman

A man has been bailed over the alleged assault and robbery of an off-duty police officer in western Sydney.

It was an unfortunate case of mistaken identity when an off-duty police officer was assaulted and robbed by three men in Sydney's west.

The policeman was crossing a road in Harris Park on Friday afternoon when a man in a car yelled out to him and pulled his vehicle into a nearby driveway.

Police say the male driver and two passengers got out of the car and assaulted the officer.

They stole his backpack, containing his police uniform and identification, before the officer escaped uninjured.

He was able to take a photograph of the vehicle.

Police say the off-duty officer was not the intended victim of the robbers.

"They've got the wrong man, basically," a police spokesman told AAP.

Police carried out a search warrant at a property in Blacktown on Friday night, where they allegedly found a police uniform and identification.

A 32-year-old man was arrested and subsequently charged with robbery in company.

He was granted bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court on September 27.
