Man charged over hit-and-run toddler death

A 30-year-old man has faced court after being charged over a hit-and-run on a suburban Perth street that killed a 22-month-old boy.

A man who allegedly ran over a 22-month-old boy in a stolen car on a suburban Perth street then fled the scene has appeared briefly in court.

The toddler was hit out the front of a Merriwa home just after 5pm on Friday and was rushed to hospital but died a short time later.

Police found the car, which had allegedly been stolen, in Cockburn on Saturday.

On Sunday, police charged 30-year-old Yanchep man Karel Kivits with failing to report an incident occasioning bodily harm, stealing a motor vehicle and driving without a licence.

He was refused bail and appeared in Northbridge Magistrates Court on Sunday.

Kivits is due to face Perth Magistrates Court on April 29.
