A 20-year-old will appear in court on the NSW Central Coast after allegedly shooting another man in the chest, leaving him critically injured.

Police say officers were called to Buff Point near Wyong on Saturday evening following reports of a shooting.

"Initial investigations suggest an altercation took place between two groups of people outside a home before the man was shot," a NSW police statement said.

The 21-year-old victim was airlifted to Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital after presenting at Wyong Hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest.

His alleged attacker was refused bail and is due to front Wyong Local Court on Sunday charged with discharging a firearm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
