Police have arrested a Melbourne man in western Sydney following an online child abuse sting.

In September, police began posing as a 14-year-old boy online and started talking to the 60-year-old man.

He allegedly made numerous sexually explicit comments during the exchanges then travelled to Parramatta to meet for sex.

On Monday afternoon the police arrested the man in Parramatta and in a subsequent search of a Liverpool hotel room found a laptop and other electronic devices.

He will appear at Parramatta Local Court on Tuesday, charged with using a carriage service to procure a person under 16 years of age for sexual activity, and using a carriage service to transmit indecent material to a person under 16.
