A man has been charged with breaking into a Sydney hotel room where a couple were sleeping and stealing items including a purse.

The couple, both aged 43, awoke at about 2am on Sunday after hearing a door adjoining another room being opened.

They found an unknown man standing in their room, who then apologised and went back into his room next door.

The pair contacted police after discovering items missing from their room, including a $1000 purse.

A 41-year-old man was arrested at the hotel and charged with aggravated break and enter and committing a serious indictable offence.
