Man charged over Sydney shooting

Police have charged a man, 19, over a shooting in Sydney's west, which has left a man in a serious condition in hospital.

A man has been charged with shooting a man in the stomach, leaving him in a serious condition in a Sydney hospital.

A 21-year-old man was found with a gunshot wound to his stomach on Wednesday night in a residential street at Tregear, in the city's west, police say.

He was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition after surgery.

The alleged shooter, a 19-year-old man, was arrested at the scene.

Police charged him with discharging a firearm with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and possessing and using an unauthorised firearm.

He was refused bail and scheduled to appear before Mt Druitt Local Court on Thursday.

Forensic specialists are examining the crime scene and police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

On Wednesday, Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione warned "punk gun-slingers" would be targeted under a new police command.

Operation Talon, to be headed by Deputy Commissioner Nick Kaldas, merges three independent operations which separately covered western Sydney, bikie gangs and shootings.

Under Talon, Mr Kaldas said intelligence driven, high visibility policing would take a "no-mercy" approach to gun crime.
