A 20-year-old man is facing charges after authorities say he tweeted a bomb threat during a Donald Trump rally in Connecticut.

Connecticut State Police say the US Secret Service contacted them on Saturday afternoon after they saw Sean Morkys post on Twitter, "Is someone going to bomb the trump rally or am I going to have to?"

Police say that tweet was followed by another warning a friend to have his family members leave the rally so they wouldn't get hurt.

The Republican presidential hopeful appeared in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on Saturday.

Authorities tracked the tweets to a Waterbury home, where they found Morkys.

After determining he didn't pose an immediate threat, he was taken into custody and released on a $US25,000 ($A32,310.18) bond.
