A man has been charged with the murder of north Queensland woman Leann Lapham almost seven years after she disappeared.

Ms Lapham vanished in Innisfail three weeks after giving birth to a son in April 2010.

Investigators said at the time they believed the 30-year-old had met with foul play.

The subsequent investigation uncovered a drug ring and led to the arrests of 25 people.

Late on Wednesday night police said a 42-year-old Innisfail man had been charged with one count of murder and one of interfering with a corpse.

He is due to appear in Innisfail Magistrates Court on Thursday.

But police say efforts to find Ms Lapham's body remain active and Detective Inspector Geoff Marsh will on Thursday make a public appeal for information.

Officers involved in the inquiry began excavating a far north Queensland tow truck yard in November.

At the time of her disappearance, a 36-year-old man known to Ms Lapham was questioned by detectives.
