A man has been charged with murder after the fatal stabbing of a woman at her home at Townsville in north Queensland.

The 32-year-old woman died after being stabbed just before 11pm on Saturday at the unit block in Idalia, police say.

A man, 36, who was known to the woman, was arrested and taken to hospital for treatment for an injury on his arm.

He has been charged with murder and will appear in a bedside hearing on Monday.

Detective Acting Superintendent Cheryl Scanlon told media on Sunday that it was another horrible case of domestic homicide.

"This is a terribly tragic set of circumstances and this is a young lady, at 32 years of age, cut down at the prime of her life," she said.

When asked if the man lived at the woman's residence, Detective Acting Superintendent Scanlon said "not at the moment".

Police were not aware of any previous domestic violence incidents at the home, which led Detective Acting Superintendent Scanlon to urge the public to speak out.

"We all understand the urgency around domestic violence and it's certainly on the national agenda... sadly what often happens is that even though people know, people don't want to get involved," she said.

"We understand that, but this really is becoming everybody's business. It's everybody's responsibility to do what we can to protect the vulnerable in the community."

Police urge anyone who has a neighbour, friend, or relative believed to be in a high risk relationship, or who might have their personal safety at stake, to call triple zero.

* National domestic violence helpline: 1800 737 732 or 1800RESPECT. In an emergency, call triple zero.
