Man dead after Brisbane Gateway car crash

A man has died after a serious crash on Brisbane's Gateway Motorway near Rochedale that stopped northbound traffic for more than three hours.

A passenger has died after the car he was travelling in collided with a ute driving on the wrong side of a major motorway in a "horrible" crash in Brisbane.

The 61-year-old was in a car driving northbound on the Gateway Motorway when the accident happened at 4.20am on Sunday.

Acting Inspector Alicia Coyne said the "horrible" accident left an 80 metre trail of near the Mount Gravatt Capalaba Road exit.

"The amount of damage would indicate he was travelling at a high speed; not necessarily over the speed limit, but it is 100km on that part," Acting Insp Coyne told reporters.

"It would have been on top of them (very quickly) and you certainly wouldn't be expecting a car to come from the other direction."

The man was rushed to hospital but died from his injuries, while the 63-year-old woman driving the car was treated in hospital for serious injuries.

The 29-year-old driver of the ute sustained minor injuries and is expected to be charged when the forensic crash unit completes its investigation, with police looking at whether alcohol or drugs were a factor.

The crash closed the motorway northbound for three hours.

It follows a fatal crash on Saturday on the Pacific Motorway at Pimpama on the Gold Coast, where a 32-year-old woman died when her car crashed head-on into another car which had crossed onto the wrong side of the road.

Queensland's road toll currently stands at 97 following the weekend crashes.
