Man dead after car avoids police stop

A man has died after a car he was in crashed while eluding Victoria police in the Melbourne suburb of Seaford.

A man has been found dead in a car that crashed after the driver sped off when Victoria police tried to pull the vehicle over.

Officers found the vehicle a short time later after it had crashed into a pole in the Melbourne suburb of Seaford around 1am on Sunday.

They found a man dead in the back seat. A woman passenger was found nearby.

The driver of the car fled on foot when he saw police. He was found a few hours later after a search of the area and arrested.

An investigation into the incident will be oversighted by Professional Standards Command as per normal procedure.
