A man has been killed in a shooting in south-west Sydney.

A police operation is currently underway in and around Matthew Avenue in Heckenberg after the man was shot while driving on Friday evening.

"The operation follows an incident shortly after 6.30pm this evening where a man was killed following a reported gunshot," a NSW Police spokesman said.

"Members of the public and motorists are advised to avoid the area while the operation continues."

The man collided with a pedestrian when he lost control of his car after being shot.

The pedestrian has been rushed to Liverpool Hospital, where their condition is not yet known.

There are unconfirmed reports police are negotiating with a man inside a nearby house in connection with the shooting.
