A man has died after being buried in soil at the base of a dry dam in regional Victoria.

Authorities say the 28-year-old man was working alone, excavating a trench at the base of the dam in East Gippsland, when it collapsed on him late on Monday. He was found dead at the scene on Tuesday.

The incident occurred on a farm at Gelantipy, about 50km north of Buchan. WorkSafe is investigating.

There have been eight workplace deaths in Victoria this year, one less than this time last year.
