A man has died after being hit by a bus when he stepped out of an Uber in Sydney's CBD.

The 30-year-old, who was was riding-sharing with mates, stepped out of the car when it stopped at traffic lights on the corner of Bathurst and Elizabeth streets around 3am on Saturday, police said.

He died at the scene.

"It all happened rather quickly in terms of the door being opened and the passenger stepping out of the vehicle," Inspector Kerrie Brill told journalists on Saturday afternoon.

She said police were still trying to contact the man's family, and that the Uber and bus drivers were incredibly "shaken up".

There weren't any passengers in the bus at the time.
