A man who was pulled unconscious from the ocean at a Newcastle beach several days ago has died in hospital.

The 67-year-old was standing on a sandbar about 20 metres offshore at Dixon Park Beach on Thursday morning before he was seen floating face down in the water, NSW police said.

He was pulled from the water and suffered a cardiac arrest on the beach with lifeguards performing CPR until paramedics arrived.

He was revived and rushed to hospital in a critical condition but died in the early hours of Sunday.

His death continues a run of deaths at NSW beaches in the first fortnight of 2018.

Last week a 33-year-old swimmer died in hospital two days after being pulled from the water at a Port Kembla beach south of Sydney.

On January 4 a rock fisher drowned after she was swept from rocks on the NSW Central Coast near the Munmorah State Conservation Area.
