A 73-year-old male pedestrian has died after being run over when a car rammed into a crowd of people in the south-western town of Heidelberg.
Armed police earlier shot the driver after he injured three people when he drove his car into a pedestrian area in the centre of the city on Saturday. He was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The driver, who was armed with a knife, attempted to flee on foot after the ramming, a police spokesman said. Police eventually managed to stop him about 150 metres away, and shot him.
The man's motives were not immediately clear, however, police said there were no indications of a terrorist background to the incident. They said he was a 35-year-old German man.
The man drove a black Opel car from Bismarckplatz, a busy part of the town, towards the entrance of a central pedestrian zone. The area was closed down after the incident. Police were still examining the car, which had hit a post.
A sniffer dog was used to check the vehicle for explosives, but nothing was found.
A helicopter was used to record the scene from the air, police said on Twitter.
The two other pedestrians - a 32-year-old Austrian man and a 29-year-old woman from Bosnia-Herzegovina - were only slightly injured and were able to be treated at the scene, police said.
