A man has died after his car hit a cow on a rural Victorian road.

Police believe the man, 62, was driving in Dalmore early on Tuesday when he struck the cow, which had already been hit by another vehicle.

The man from Koo Wee Rup veered off the road into a ditch and died at the scene.

The other driver, a 45-year-old Drouin man, was not injured.

Local council officers are trying to find the owner of the dead cow.
