A man has died after being shot by police during a confrontation in NSW's central west.

A man has been shot dead following a confrontation with police in NSW's central west.

Police reportedly arrived at View Street in Kelso, near Bathurst, about 7pm on Wednesday after reports of an incident in the area.

Officers shot a man after a confrontation, NSW Police said in a statement.

The man died at the scene.

A critical incident investigation has been launched as police examine the circumstances surrounding incident.
