Man dies after driving off Vic alpine road

A man died after he lost control of his car on a Victorian alpine road and plummeted down an embankment.

A ute has careered off an alpine road and plummeted 15 metres down an embankment in Victoria, killing the driver.

The 31-year-old Bruthen man's car lost control and veered off the Great Alpine Road at Tongio on Saturday afternoon, police say.

The driver, and sole occupant of the car, died at the scene.

Paramedics, CFA, SES and police were all on scene, and the road was closed for several hours, as emergency services surveyed the crash site and recovered the vehicle.

Victoria's road toll stands at 142 compared with 158 at this time in 2016.
