A man has handed himself in to police after three live snakes were found in a parcel at a Newcastle mail sorting centre.

Staff contacted police around 10.30pm on Wednesday after they found the reptiles in a parcel.

A snake handler was called to deal with the serpents, which ranged from 0.2m to 1.2 metres in length.

Police were told the parcel was given to a post office in nearby Lake Macquarie earlier the same day.

The snakes' species have not yet been confirmed, police say.

Photos of a man officers wanted to speak to were released on Friday morning.

A man has since presented himself at Waratah Police Station and is being spoken to by investigators.
