One man has been arrested and second is on the run after a fatal shooting during a botched robbery at a shopping centre in Sydney's southwest.

Police say a man was shot in the head and abdomen during the robbery at Villawood Value Fruit Market and died at the scene.

Emergency services descended on the centre just after 3:40pm (AEDT) following reports of an armed robbery.

Police said two armed men entered the store and threatened staff.

A woman told Network Ten the robbers had guns and escaped out the back.

An Ambulance Service of NSW spokeswoman said paramedics treated the shot man, who went into cardiac arrest at the scene.

"Unfortunately these were fatal injuries and he died at the scene," she said.

Police would not confirm whether the victim was the shopkeeper or a customer.

A witness reported hearing four or five gun shots.

"I was in the TAB when I heard the sound of guns and screaming of the people," he told Network Ten.

Police arrested one man at the scene and he was being questioned at Fairfield police station on Saturday night.

Officers are scouring the area for the other man involved in the robbery.

Two police officers also ended up in hospital after they were involved in a car crash near the shooting scene.

A police spokesman said the officers were responding under lights and sirens to the shooting at Villawood when the crash occurred on Tangerine St.

One officer suffered an arm injury and the other had respiratory problems.

The police officers and another motorist, suffering a concussion, were taken to Liverpool Hospital for treatment.
