An Indonesian man who allegedly hit and killed an Australian woman with his motorbike should have slowed down, honked or stopped, a court has heard.

Bernadette O'Connor was crossing the road in front of Peninsula Beach Resort at the popular tourist spot South Kuta in Bali about 1.30am on July 31 when knocked down by a motorbike.

It was because of 23-year-old Benafentura Nggeo's "recklessness" Ms O'Connor died, prosecutor Wiraguna Wiradharma told Denpasar District Court on Monday.

"The defendant saw the victim ... was crossing the street," he said at the opening day of Nggeo's trial.

"The defendant should have slowed down, honked or stopped to give priority to the victim but he didn't do that and the defendant's motorbike hit the victim which caused her to fall on the street and die."
