A man has been charged with drug trafficking after police found more than $60,000 worth of heroin and cash in his car.

The Cremone man was arrested in Hallam, southeast of Melbourne, after police were called to investigate suspicious behaviour in the area about midnight on Tuesday.

Police say they found drugs, knives, cash and about $1200 in casino chips in the 39-year-old's car.

He faced an out-of-sessions hearing on Wednesday where he was charged with trafficking a commercial quantity and possessing a drug of dependence.

The man has been remanded into custody to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Thursday.
