Man injured in Vic garden shed explosion

A man is in a critical condition in hospital after suffering burns to his body and face in a shed explosion in Melbourne.

A Melbourne man is fighting for life with burns to 75 per cent of his body after an explosion in his garden shed.

Upper Ferntree Gully CFA captain Peter Smith said the man was filling a diving cylinder inside his shed when the explosion occurred at 5.20pm on Tuesday.

"There was a very small fire following the explosion, which was enough to burn 75 per cent of his body," Mr Smith told AAP on Wednesday.

The man in his 40s, suffered burns to his head, back, hands and legs and also broke his leg as a result of the backyard explosion at Upper Ferntree Gully.

Ambulance Victoria says he was put into an induced coma and flown to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition.

Forty minutes later paramedics were called to an home in Moe where a woman was injured when she apparently threw an accelerant onto a fire to light it.

She has burns to the face, neck and shoulder.

The woman was airlifted to The Alfred hospital in a stable condition.
