Police have named Darren John Webb as the victim of the Crown Casino hotel murder as they hunt down a man they believe could be vital to their investigation.
Elias Herodotou, 28, of Coburg, is being urged to hand himself in, although police refuse to say what role he may have played in the killing of the 40-year-old from Thornbury, whose throat was cut at the Crown Metropol early on Sunday.
"We believe he was present at the hotel on the evening of the incident, and we would hope that he would come and speak to us about that," acting Sergeant Mark Hatt said.
It's believed Herodotou and Webb knew each other and both are known to police.
"Investigators have been speaking to members of his family and we have been trying to negotiate with him to come forward and at this stage we would appeal for him to do that," he said.
Members of the public are urged not to approach Herodotou, but to call triple-zero if they know his whereabouts.
Police have previously said at least two people were inside the hotel room when Webb was killed.
CCTV of the heavily monitored hotel is being reviewed.
A Crown employee says staff have heard unconfirmed reports the dead man was found with multiple syringe stab wounds to his neck.
Crown Casino says it can't comment while a police investigation is underway.
