A gunman remains on the run after a man was shot in the shoulder at a home in north Melbourne.

Police say a man in his 40s was shot at a Heidelberg West home at about 9am on Sunday and was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The gunman fled in a car, but police say he is known to the victim.

Three of the four people who were inside the home at the time of the shooting have been released without charge after police arrested them.

One woman remained in custody for unrelated matters, Victoria Police said in a statement.
