Man released after Vic car body find

A man has been released from hospital and has not been charged following the discovery of a body in the passenger seat of a car he crashed.

A driver hurt when his car - which was carrying the lifeless body of another man in the passenger seat - crashed into a concrete truck has been released from hospital.

Police made the macabre discovery of the man's body, with a suspected gunshot wound in his side, when they attended the crash scene on Tuesday morning.

Homicide detectives are investigating.

The car's driver, a 22-year-old man, was taken to hospital with minor injuries but has since been released, a Victoria Police spokeswoman said.

"He has been released. The investigation is ongoing. No charges have been laid," she told AAP.

Police have not identified the victim.

The truck driver was unhurt.

Police believe the victim was shot somewhere else.

"We don't believe the actual shooting incident was connected to the accident at the intersection," Detective Senior Sergeant Stephen McIntyre told reporters at the scene on Tuesday.

"We believe the gunshot was sustained somewhere other than this location."

An autopsy is expected to be completed in the coming days.

Police are trying to piece together the car's movements before the collision.

They ask anyone who saw a beige Nissan Pulsar with registration ROP-683 between Monday and Tuesday to contact them.
