A new mum is fighting for life after a car plunged into a Victorian dam.

The woman and her husband were reportedly on the way to hospital to see their sick newborn baby when the car he was driving veered off a dirt driveway and into the dam at 10.20am on Saturday.

The man managed to get out and pull his 36-year-old wife, named by Seven News as Kerry Arrow, from the car at Healesville, northeast of Melbourne.

Paramedics treated the woman before she was airlifted to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition.

Police arrested a 32-year-old man at the scene but he has since been released without charge.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.

The car was pulled from the water and taken for forensic testing.
