A man has been rushed to hospital and is in a non-critical condition after setting himself on fire on the grounds of the New Zealand Parliament, CNBC reported on Thursday.

Matthew Taylor reported the man had been taken to hospital with critical burns on Thursday about 4pm local time.

Witnesses said placards were on the ground around the man as ambulance staff treated him just before 4pm on Thursday.
A spokeswoman for Wellington Free Ambulance said two paramedics and a senior officer attended the scene and soon after transported the man to Wellington Hospital with critical injuries.

His age was unknown, she said.

Parliament's forecourt and lawn have been locked down and were being treated as a crime scene, Parliamentary Services said.

Prime Minister Bill English, who is campaigning for Saturday's election, told reporters he had not yet been briefed on the incident but would issue a comment later in the day.
