A police officer has shot dead a man during a stand-off at a train station southwest of Brisbane.
It's believed the man was armed with a knife at Ipswich Central train station when police were forced to open fire around 4.15pm on Sunday.
Acting Superintendent Mel Adams said three police were confronted by a man during the "brief" encounter on the train platform.
"It is really a tragedy this Sunday afternoon," she told reporters near the scene.
"To have one deceased person is one too many. This is a really traumatic time for police and for the local community and we are going to work as hard as we can to help people through that."
Supt Adams would not say why police fired at the man or whether he'd been on the train as it was "very early" stages of the investigation.
"We are not looking for anyone else. We have established a crime scene," a police spokesman said.
Police said there were no other injuries and railway services have been suspended, with commuters told to avoid the area.
The Ethical Standards Command is on scene investigating and police are yet to speak with the man's family, Supt Adams said.
Ipswich and Rosewood train lines are suspended in both directions from Thomas Street due to the shooting until the last service on Sunday.
