Police are searching for a gunman following a shooting in Sydney's west.

Police are searching for a gunman after a 21-year-old man was shot in the leg in Sydney's west. (AAP)

A gunman is on the run after a shooting in western Sydney.

Emergency services were called to Norman Street at Merrylands just after 6pm on Monday.

Police say a 21-year-old man was shot in the leg.

"Witnesses told police a man was seen running towards Frances Street soon after," police said in a statement.

The victim was taken to Westmead Hospital.
