Heightened tensions between rival bikie gangs may be linked to the shooting of a man in Adelaide who was sprayed with bullets as he went to open his front door.

The 30-year-old has undergone surgery in the Royal Adelaide Hospital after the attack at suburban Gilles Plains early on Thursday.

His condition is stable and his wounds are not considered life threatening.

Detective Superintendent Craig Patterson said police were aware of heightened tensions between motorcycle gangs and while convinced the victim was targeted, it was unclear if the attack was directly gang-related.

Nine shots were fired at the man's home, including four that hit the victim.

"Police are keeping an open mind with regard to this matter, which may have other crime links," Supt Patterson said.

"I can assure the public that this was not a random attack and all lines of inquiry are being actively pursued."

Police said it was also too soon to establish a link between the shooting and another recent incident when a man's home was invaded and he was shot in the leg, although that incident is considered bikie related.

Supt Patterson said investigations of such matters were often hindered by gang members who were notorious for not assisting with inquiries, often choosing to hide evidence and intimidate witnesses.

"If we had full cooperation, there is no doubt police would be able to progress their investigation faster," he said.

"We'll be doing everything we can to arrest the offenders, but we need information to move forward."

As part of their investigation police are looking for a silver Commodore ute, last seen leaving the area of the shooting.
