Man targeted Sydney doctor with bombs

A man has been arrested at Sydney Airport after police foiled his alleged plot to bomb the office of a Sydney eye doctor and a hospital.

A man allegedly targeted his Sydney doctor and a hospital with two homemade bombs that police seized before they detonated.

The 42-year-old was arrested by Australian Federal Police at Sydney Airport on Thursday after returning from Malta, according to media reports.

The two bombs were meant for the offices of the man's eye doctor and a hospital in Sydney's CBD.

The man's ex-wife contacted police in April after she found the two bombs at her Albion Park home, in the NSW Illawarra.

It is understood the man left Australia for Malta days before the discovery.

The bomb squad rendered them safe before they were set to explode.

It is understood the man held a grudge against his doctor for five years, prompting him to manufacture the bombs.

He appeared in Sydney's Central Local Court charged with an arrest warrant for manufacturing the device with an intent to injure others.

He was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

The magistrate also ordered the man's name, the name of his doctor and the locations of the two buildings that he targeted be suppressed.
