Man to face trial over Brisbane mall siege

An alleged gunman who forced thousands to evacuate Brisbane's Queen Street mall will face trial over the dramatic standoff.

An alleged gunman will face trial over a siege that saw thousands of people evacuated from Brisbane's Queen Street mall.

Columns of workers and shoppers fled the mall in March this year when Lee Matthew Hillier allegedly produced a gun.

On Monday, he was committed to stand trial on seven charges relating to the 90-minute stand off, which ended when police shot him with bean-bag bullets.

News crews captured the dramatic siege, screening live footage of a heavily tattooed man who'd taped a gun to his hand. At one point the gunman held the weapon to his throat.

Hillier is facing charges including assaulting police and other emergency services personnel.

In the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday, Hillier said he did not wish to enter a plea but expressed a desire to sack his legal team.

"No offence to this young lady for representing me but I'm not happy with my legal team at the moment," he said.

Magistrate Anne Thacker said Hillier's legal representation was a matter that could be dealt with later.

Hillier was committed to trial at a date to be fixed.

There was no application for bail.
