A man who climbed into a young girl's bedroom and allegedly indecently assaulted her could have been stalking the family for several weeks, according to police.
The eight-year-old was asleep when the man allegedly climbed through a window and onto her bed before allegedly indecently assaulting her at the family's home in Sydney on Monday.
The child was not physically injured but "extremely distressed" and told her mother, who then contacted officers.
A large-scale manhunt is underway with officers again sweeping the area on Thursday.
Police said the alleged attack appeared targeted and the individual could have been stalking the family for up to two weeks.
"We are asking any member of the community who has seen anything suspicious to come forward, anything in the last two weeks," Superintendent Karen McCarthy said.
CCTV footage shows a man using what appears to be a chair to climb into the raised ground floor window about 2.50am. He re-emerged and fled two minutes later.
"This is a very rare but obviously a very serious matter," Ms McCarthy said.
"We are working closely with the family to make sure they are well supported. The welfare of our young victim and family is of paramount importance."
The CCTV footage has been shared on social media platforms with many people urging parents to lock their windows in Kingsford.
The man - wearing a dark hooded jumper, cargo pants and a hat - was last seen running down Barker Street near the University of NSW towards McDonald's.
The girl told police the man had an Australian or British accent.
