Anyone with an email account will know about spam attacks, but Sydney bus passengers were stunned when they came under attack from a man armed with a real tin of Spam.

Police say a 32-year-old man was on a city-bound bus on Illawarra Road at Marrickville, in the city's inner west about 8.40am (AEDT) on Wednesday when he got into an argument with two other passengers.

He got off the bus, before throwing the tinned meat - and a brick - at the vehicle's windows, and then fleeing the scene.

"The brick smashed the window and a 47-year-old woman seated on the bus was injured when shards of glass hit her in the eye," police said.

Two passengers hurt

"A 39-year-old man was also injured suffering lacerations to his legs from the broken glass."

The pair needed treatment at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

A man was later arrested in nearby Warren Road.

Police say he was taken to Newtown police station before being taken to hospital for assessment.

Investigations are continuing.
