The US Secret Service has arrested a man after finding a hunting rifle, ammunition and a knife in the boot of his car near the White House.
The Secret Service says a man approached a uniformed division officer at the White House.
“He said that someone had told him that he should come to the White House so he had driven to Washington to do so,” said a senior law enforcement official.
“The officers interviewed him there and realised that there needed to be further investigating because something wasn’t right.”
Officers then searched his car, and found a hunting rifle and the ammunition.

The man, identified as 41 year old R.J. Kapheim, from Iowa, was arrested and charged with possessing an unregistered firearm.
The incident is the latest in a string of security breaches at the White House.
In September, a man jumped the fence of the White House, armed with a knife and was able to gain entry to the building.
The subsequent criticism prompted the resignation of Secret Service Director, Julie Pierson.
