Manchester streets quiet, courts busy

Police said there were no reports of major incidents of disorder overnight in Greater Manchester as the number of arrests there rose to 145.

Police said there were no reports of major incidents of disorder overnight in Greater Manchester as the number of arrests there rose to 145.

More than 110 of those charged over the riots are currently appearing before a special sitting at Manchester Magistrates' Court expected to continue well into the early hours of Thursday.

Less people were on the streets of the city centre as the night wore on and the rain continued on Wednesday night.

Police maintained a sizeable presence. Meanwhile, two men were arrested on Wednesday night after police seized a balaclava, a bag of ball bearings, a fuel can, drugs and cash following a vehicle search in Salford, Greater Manchester.

Assistant Chief Constable Garry Shewan said: "While we have had no major incidents of disorder in our cities tonight, these arrests show there are still people who are prepared to carry weapons with the intent on committing violence.

"But what this also shows is the scale of tonight's police operation and the commitment our officers have shown to stopping anyone who wants to carry out the sort of shameful criminality we saw yesterday

"We have said all along that we will do everything in our power to protect our communities and we will continue to have a high visibility presence both to reassure members of our community but also arrest criminals."
