A police boat crashed into rocks off Queenscliff headline on Sydney’s northern beaches on Saturday during an operation to locate and move a submerged car.
Police believe the car was driven over the cliff in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Divers located a submerged vehicle and a man’s body around lunchtime. Two police boats and divers were on the scene and appeared to be trying to recover, or move, the submerged vehicle.
One police boat got into difficulty close to the cliff line. Efforts to assist the boat, which appeared to have lost maneuverability failed and the boat was washed against the rocks.
Police were called to the end of Queenscliff Road in Queenscliff at 1.40am, following reports something had gone over the cliff.
Witnesses said they had discovered a broken fence after hearing a loud bang, with a light also spotted in the water.
Police divers entered the waters off the Queenscliff headland just after 11am and found a car sitting on its roof, the ABC reports.
The body of a man was found in the submerged vehicle at 11.30am.
Police say there is no evidence the man's death is suspicious and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
