A man's body has been discovered on a riverbank in Sydney's north some three hours after the ute he was driving was found crashed into a fence - and 15 hours after his concerned friends first started looking for him.

NSW Police say friends of the 24-year-old man began searching the Laughtondale area about 1am on Sunday after he drove off in a utility.

Emergency services joined the search after 1pm on Sunday when the ute was found crashed into a fence on Singleton Road.

At about 4pm the man's body was found on the banks of the Hawkesbury River.

Police don't believe the man's death is suspicious and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
